Tiered Grading in a hurry
Recently in one of the Civil 3D discussions, a poster requested a fast solution to a multi tiered grading. The requirements were 2 tiers@ 1:1 cut slope, each 4.5m deep, with a flat 1m land in between, and it appeared flat at the bottom. The fill slope was similar, but @2:1 slope.
In an attempt to VERY quickly help the poster, I use feet in this ugly example, but the process is the same. Read more »

Part 3 of Point Creation Scenario
Check out Part 2 here.
In this discussion I will pick up here where we left off. We will cover Creating Points.
Here we will discuss:

- Point Identity
- Points created by Station and Offset on a Line
- Minor adjustment to a Point Label Style
- Editing Point Properties

Point Display Control
There are alot of display control questions. I will post a permanent page on the point architecture, butin the mean time, here is some input on workflow. See also the Point Cleanup Post.
The terminology tends to get a bit muddy, since there are 2 Label Layers. For this discussion, the P-MARKER and P-LABEL layers are what is found in the POINT STYLE. The LABEL layer is what is found in the LABEL STYLE. Read more »
Point Arrow stop at Marker
How do you stop the Point Label Arrow at the Point Parker?
This question was posted to the Autodesk Discussion groups. Someone was kind enough to answer it there, but I thought a few screen shots would be nice for my group. Read more »
Have you seen the new lineup for Civil 3D?
Autodesk anounced it’s Civil lineup: AutoCAD Civil and AutoCAD Civil 3D.
That’s right ladies and gentlemen, with Land Desktop in no further production, no reason not to split up the platform again. I have not reviewed the costs, but it the capabilities are quite similar. I suspect alot of companies will move to the new Civil product.
There are a few disturbing items though. Most companies migrating from Land Desktop will undoubtedly go to the Civil product. Unfortunately Geospatial analysis from MAP is in the 3D package.
Surveyors are likely to go to the more simplified version, but there is no Shape file nor TIF support. All you LABINS fans, you might have too buck up and spend more money.
Autodesk says that the target audience for the Civil product is technicians. The 3D product is analysis personell, engineers. You know… I don’t know many engineers who even know that the MAP menu source is there, much less what it does. Unfortunately that is alot of what is being left out of the Civil package.
There doesn’t really seem to be much of a difference in the product lineup. However if you do it all, then you need to keep your eyes and ears open during this subscription upgrade.

Point Cleanup Mindset
This is the Default point display method we utilize here. This method allows me huge flexibility, and I rarely get that, “oops, I left a point layer on” problem. This method may not be for you. Perhaps you will still get something out of this post.
This post is for all of my readers that are having troubles with layer inheritance and Legacy mindset. Yes Legacy Mindset is a disease! It can spread. Legacy understanding and memories of how things have evolved is essential. However holding on the methods of 5 years ago will make you unprofitable. 10 years old methods will make you unemployed. Parcel Layers
This post is specifically for Parcels Entities, however many of the same principals apply to other objects as well. I will cut this post down in favor of another that deals with Object / Display layers for all civil entities as a whole.
These layers may be way off standard for you, so customize it the way you want.
Parcel Entities have both an Object layer and a Display Layer.
One suggestion is as follows:
Object layers structured for what the Object conveys. Display layers for whom the Object is conveyed TO.
